but 5/4 is just one extra beat in a bar. so its "1 and a two and a 3 and a 4 and a 5 and a" instead of "1 and a 2 and a 3 and a 4 and a"

it can be. it can turn into 13/8. but 5/4 itself can be complex. just look at "vicarious" by TOOl's intro riff.
